I've worked on quite a few projects as a voulenteer, and I've found that you often get to learn new skills to fill roles that on paying projects would be handled by someone else. For instance I was recruited to work on modeling for a game.However, since the majority of it was in very early stages and there was not any dedicated concept artist I picked up some of the concept artwork/ I had to learn quite a lot about how concept art differs from typical sketching.
